Law school hosts International Day on March 18

Event is school's fourth March focus on diversity

March 12, 2009 -- The Charleston School of Law will celebrate the Lowcountry's cultural diversity March 18 during a two-hour International Day Dance and a Taste of Cultures.

Area residents are invited to participate in the event, which will be held at the school's 81 Mary Street building from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the school's Office of Diversity Initiatives and Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston. The event is free. Participants will be able to make donations to offset costs.

"International Day gives students and the community a tiny window through which they can see and experience the foods and dance of various groups who live and work in Charleston," said Visiting Professor Debra J. Gammons, who serves as the school's acting director of diversity initiatives. "By giving people a glimpse of the many cultures that add to the flavor of Charleston, this celebration allows interactions that may not normally occur and these interactions among people further strengthen the Lowcountry. We are not islands but communities with common interests, concerns and goals."

The Peruvian folk dance group, Sol de Oro, will perform several dances at the event.

Cuisines that will be offered include African (provided by Funmilayo Ojehomon's Catering Services), American Indian (business owner Teresa Gore), Caribbean (Roy Caldeira), Hispanic (Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston and Carmen Rigonán), Turkish (Sermet's Corner), and Middle Eastern (GNS Subs and Middle Eastern Deli), including some Kosher treats (Sweet Smith Bakery).

Gammons also lauded Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston, which was founded in 1978, for helping to make the event a success.

Charleston School of Law's Office of Diversity Initiatives seeks to recruit law students who are underrepresented in the legal profession and to educate middle and high school students about the practice of law and encourage them to make a difference by considering law school.

"International Day further develops the outreach the Office of Diversity Initiatives seeks," she added.
