Smith-Butler named to head law school library
To be associate dean for Library and Information Technology
APRIL 20, 2009 -- The Charleston School of Law's new associate dean for Library and Information Technology will be Lisa Smith-Butler, a noted legal librarian with national experience in legal training and the practice of law, Dean Andy Abrams announced today.
"We are truly excited to have an individual of Ms. Smith-Butler's experience and expertise join the Charleston School of Law as our new dean of the Library," Abrams said. "Ms. Smith-Butler is a nationally- recognized leader in the dialogue on the subject of establishing the law library of the 21st Century as a true learning center.
"Undoubtedly with her background and interest, Ms. Smith-Butler will play a pivotal role in the continued development of the Charleston School of Law as the provider of a unique and exceptional legal education."
Currently the assistant dean and director of the Law Library and Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Ms. Smith-Butler will join the Charleston School of Law on June 29 to run its library and information technology program.
At Nova Southeastern, Ms. Smith-Butler has served as an associate professor of law, teaching Advanced Legal Research and Juvenile Law in the law program and Workplace Privacy and Technology in the master's degree employment law program. She has also served as the public services librarian at Georgia State University and a librarian at a major Atlanta law firm. Ms. Smith-Butler, who also has been in private law practice, is licensed in Nebraska and Georgia.
Co-author and editor of "Law Librarianship in the 21st Century," Ms. Smith-Butler holds a bachelor's degree from Hastings College, a law degree from Creighton University School of Law and a master's degree in library science from Clark Atlanta University. She is active in several local, regional and national law library associations.
