Prospective Student Overview
Minority Law Day
Each year, the Black Law Students Association, the Office of Diversity Initiatives and the Office of Admissions partner to host the Law School's annual Minority Law Day. Through this event, the Black Law Students Association invites local middle, high school and college students to spend a day at the Law School to learn more about the law school admissions process, legal careers, and what it means to be a law student.
Student of Color Reception : In 2006, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough partnered with the Office of Diversity Initiatives to invite minority high school and college students to interact with attorneys at Nelson Mullins and learn more about the legal profession. Several students from high schools in the Charleston area attended this event.
SPECTRA/Senior Project
In addition to realizing increased numbers of students of color in the incoming class, the school recently launched an important initiative to build individual connections with younger students of color interested in legal careers. Through a partnership with the College of Charleston, the School has developed a pre-law mentoring program for students in two College of Charleston programs: the Senior Project(a program for rising high school seniors of color and/or potential first-generation college students) and SPECTRA (a program for entering first-year College of Charleston students from underrepresented groups.) Participating students will be assigned law students as mentors and will be included in all public events occurring on the School's campus.
Students in both programs attended presentations by law students, school administrators and faculty where they were introduced to life in law school and the legal profession. Program participants learned about the admissions process, how to prepare for law school classes and career options available to law school graduates.
As the students continue in the pre-law mentoring program, they will receive more specific instruction on taking the LSAT and applying to the law school. Based on the results of this pilot effort, the school intends to expand its pre-law mentoring program to serve students at all historically black colleges and universities in South Carolina.
Road Shows
Since its inception, The Office of Diversity Initiatives has been working diligently to build relationships with colleges within the Southeastern region of the US and local elementary, middle and high schools. This year alone, the Office of Diversity has visited several schools to invite students to consider a career in law or to encourage the students to consider attending the Charleston School of Law. Please see 2010 diversity events.
