Law school sponsors lecture series on legal careers
JAN. 14, 2010 - The Charleston School of Law this spring is offering 10 lectures on everything from professional etiquette to careers in the FBI to help students and lawyers get pragmatic advice on finding work in challenging economic times.
"The Charleston School of Law is establishing this series as an ongoing program that is designed for the leading practitioners in their fields to inform and educate our students about the vast array of areas of the law in which the students may want to practice upon their graduation," said Dean Andy Abrams. "This practical, expert counsel and advice will enable our students to make well-informed decisions as they match their areas of interests with the needs of the communities in which they settle."
The lecture series is for Charleston School of Law students. Anyone else interested in attending must receive permission from the Department of Career Services. The series starts Jan. 27:
- Jan. 27, 2010, Noon to 1 p.m.: "Estate and Elder Law" with attorneys Shirrese Brockington and Walter Kaufmann. Location: AT&T Building, 385 Meeting Street, Room 332.
- Feb. 3, 2010, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.: "Family Law and Public Service" with attorney Colleen Condon. Location: AT&T Building, 385 Meeting Street, Room 332.
- Feb. 10, 2010, Noon to 1 p.m. "Judicial Clerkships," panel discussion with attorneys Brad Banias, Steve Kozick, Lucy Sanders and Josh Winneker, who is also the school's director of career services. Location: AT&T Building, 385 Meeting Street, Room 332.
- Feb. 17, 2010, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.: "Public Interest Loan Repayment Programs" with attorney Heather Jarvis of Equal Justice Works. Location: TBA.
- Feb. 24, 2010, Noon to 1 p.m.: "Professional Etiquette" with attorney John Emerson. Location: AT&T Building, 385 Meeting Street, Room 332.
- March 24, 2010, Noon to 1 p.m.: "Immigration Law" with attorneys Robert Condy and Marco Torres. Location: AT&T Building, 385 Meeting Street, Room 332.
- March 31, 2010, Noon to 1 p.m.: "Careers in the FBI" with attorney and Special Agent Robert Derr. Location: AT&T Building, 385 Meeting Street, Room 332.
- April 21, 2010, Noon to 1 p.m.: "Bankruptcy" with attorneys Kevin Campbell, Suzanne Campbell, Harrison Penn and Daniel Ray. Location: AT&T Building, 385 Meeting Street, Room 332.
Additional sessions to be scheduled will include practicing criminal law and opening your own law firm. Locations are subject to change. Please check the Charleston School of Law Web site for updated information.
