Faculty members at the Charleston School of Law value the opportunity to provide the example, leadership and practical knowledge necessary for a well-rounded education. The attractions of Charleston and the opportunity to shape a new generation of legal scholars have drawn exceptional teachers and scholars to our school.

All faculty members have a Juris Doctor degree and have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The primary obligation of faculty members is to teach and serve the law community, particularly the students. Our student-to-faculty ratio is 20 to one or less, a ratio we believe allows extensive interaction between student and teacher.

Additionally, as one would expect in Charleston, the school is dedicated to providing a courteous, diverse, cultured atmosphere, including academic freedom and professional security.

Andy Abrams, dean and professor of law. Abrams, whose academic interests include education law and sports law, was named dean on June 3, 2008, after serving as interim dean for five months. Prior to joining the school in 2005, Abrams served in various leadership and academic roles at the College of Charleston, including provost and general counsel. Learn more. More.

Gordon Russell serves as the school's associate dean and Director of the Law Library and Information Services. He also is a professor of law. In addition to directing the law library at St. Thomas University, Russell was an associate professor of law who teaches first-year legal research and writing, advanced electronic research for upper classes and computer-assisted legal research. Russell received his master's degree in library science and bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. He got an LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario and a J.D. from the University of New Mexico. He has published and spoken extensively on law library subjects. More.

Margaret Lawton, associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor of law, has a bachelor's degree from Duke University (cum laude) and a law degree (magna cum laude) from Georgetown University Law Center. A lawyer with extensive trial and appellate experience, Lawton is a native of Allendale, S.C., and joined the Charleston School of Law in 2005 to teach substantive criminal law, constitutional criminal procedure and trial advocacy. John L.S. Simpkins, assistant professor and director of diversity initiatives, LL.M., Duke University; J.D., Duke University; B.A., Harvard University. Professor Simpkins, who has served as an adviser to several African nations on constitutional law, joins the faculty to teach the subject to second-year students. Most recently, he has served as a political science professor at Furman University. Prior to that, he was in private practice in Washington, D.C., and worked as a consultant in Africa to promote democratic institutions and to help elected officials understand and build constitutions.
