2/12/13: Student Ambassadors showcase school in new campus tour video

Release Date: 2/12/2013

They give tours to prospective students, assist at Professionalism Series events and wear the green sashes, but who are the Student Ambassadors and what exactly do they do?

The Student Ambassadors program, led by Associate Dean for Administration and Alumni Development, John Benfield, began in the spring of 2009 and is comprised of approximately 20 Charleston School of Law students. The Student Ambassadors serve as liaisons for prospective students and guests, providing a wealth of knowledge on the School and sharing their experience as Charleston Law students.

Nickisha M. Woodward, a 3L, currently serves as president of the Student Ambassadors. “The best part of being a student ambassador is providing prospective students, who are eager to begin their legal education, the information that they need to make an important decision. Additionally, imparting your love and enthusiasm for such a great law school onto the prospective law student who then decides to choose Charleston Law,” said Woodward.

Any students, except first semester 1Ls, may apply to become an ambassador by filling out an application. They must have a minimum 2.7 GPA and participate in the interview process held by the current ambassadors.  The deadline to apply for the 2013-2014 school year is Friday, Feb. 22. Ambassadors are a well-balanced mix of full-time, part-time, traditional and non-traditional students.

The current group of Student Ambassadors hail from across the country including, the states of California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Georgia. These students have studied at a variety of institutions including Emory University, Loyola Marymount University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During a typical tour, the ambassadors showcase the various classrooms, offices and study areas throughout the campus. They explain how students receive a practical law school education while gaining real-world, hands-on experience. Furthermore, they allow visitors to witness the civility and community feel for which the School is known.

In many cases, the interaction between a prospective student and their student ambassador defines their Charleston Law experience. It is through the Student Ambassadors program that visitors and guests are introduced to the law school, glimpse life as a law student and depart with a better understanding of what makes the Charleston School of Law special.
